Carolina Panthers won’t sign Plaxico Burress

Veteran wide receiver Plaxico Burress is looking for a job, and for the past few days, the Carolina Panthers seemed like a possible destination.

However, the Charlotte Observer reported that the Panthers do not intend to sign Burress.

After veteran Steve Smith, the Panthers are rather young at wide receiver, with third-year receivers Brandon LaFell and David Gettis next up on the depth chart.

Adding Burress would have given the Panthers another veteran receiver for Cam Newton, as well as a big-bodied receiver, something the Panthers roster is lacking at the moment.

While playing for the New York Jets in 2011, Burress caught 45 passes for 612 yards and eight touchdowns. Posting stats like that with suspect quarterback play shows that Burress still has some gas left in the tank, which makes it odd that a team still hasn’t signed him to a new deal.
